Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya, Mumbai – A Museum of Substance

The Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya is a museum which contains the richest collection of artifacts collaborated with the amalgamation of images, conservation, finance, research, science, technology and exhibition. A museum plays a great role in the contemporary society as it builds the old culture all over again and keeps them alive in the hearts of the current generation and the next generations.

It was the fourth day of my stay in Mumbai. Like every day I got up early in the morning and started to make plans for the rest of the day. I was carrying my ‘Mumbai Travel Guide Book’ with me and that day I came across the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu sangrahalaya in some pages. I decided to visit the museum the very day. Therefore I made planning and started moving towards the vastu sangrahalaya.

The museum is an epic repository of the ever green and rich cultural heritage of India. The cultural history of India is thousands year old but these are the few museums which keep the cultural and ancient history alive. The demographic, social, cultural, financial and economic background of the nation is held with the museum. According to the needs of the modern society, the objectives of the museum are set and formulated. Three kinds of different repositories are found in the sangrahalaya like tangible, intangible and expressive forms. The tangible forms refer to the buildings and heritage whereas the intangible forms are related to the traditions, folklore and lifestyle of the people. The third one is expressive type which relates to the music, language and stories of a particular place. All of these are effectively kept in the museum and people often visit here to relate themselves to their old and forgotten cultural values.

I personally believe that museums play a great role in keeping the old culture and values alive in the hearts of the new generation. Therefore visiting a museum should never be a task and one should go and visit it all by own. To know more about a certain city, place or country, the best way would probably be through the museums and therefore I was glad that came to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu sangrahalaya that day which provided me immense knowledge regarding the history of Maharashtra.
